On July 21st, I had the opportunity to be a part of the Glacier Nation Canada launch event at the Columbia Icefields in Jasper National Park.

The event was created by one of my friends Marcela Fernandez, a Colombian glacier activist who is the founder of Cumbres Blancas, an organization that is helping save the 6 tropical glaciers found in Colombia.

The event featured an indigenous ice walk on the Athabasca Glacier hosted by Tim Patterson of Zuc’min Guiding and a ceremony hosted by Marcela and Durga from Colombia along with talks about local indigenous teachers.

Attending were mountain guides from across the Canadian Rockies who wanted to learn more about the indigenous perspective on the glaciers. The Calgary Herald also attended and a few days later the story made the front page of the local paper (the full article is here).

During the day, we had the opportunity to learn from Tim Patterson as well as guides from the Indigenous Ice Walks, Blackfoot Elder Rod Scout and Theresa Westhaver from Howl.

Lizeth Yarleque of Humana Films made this excellent video about the experience.
